Everything you need to know about lip filler treatments

Before Your Treatment

Our lip fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in your body that helps maintain skin hydration and volume. HA fillers are FDA-approved, biocompatible, and gradually break down naturally over time. Popular brands we use include Juvederm and Restylane, which are known for their smooth, natural-looking results.

Most healthy adults over 18 are good candidates for lip fillers. Ideal candidates want to add volume, define lip borders, correct asymmetry, or reduce fine lines around the mouth. You should not get lip fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active cold sores or infections, have allergies to hyaluronic acid, or have certain autoimmune conditions. A consultation will determine if fillers are right for you.

For best results, avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) for 7 days before treatment. Avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours prior. If you're prone to cold sores, inform us so we can prescribe preventive medication. Come with clean skin and no lip products. Stay hydrated and eat beforehand to prevent lightheadedness.

The amount varies based on your goals and natural lip size. First-time clients typically start with 0.5-1ml for a subtle enhancement. Those wanting more dramatic results may need 1-2ml. We recommend a conservative approach initially—you can always add more in a follow-up appointment. During your consultation, we'll discuss your goals and recommend the appropriate amount.

During Your Treatment

We prioritize your comfort throughout the procedure. A topical numbing cream is applied 15-20 minutes before treatment. Additionally, our fillers contain lidocaine, a built-in anesthetic that provides ongoing numbing. Most clients describe the sensation as mild pressure or a slight pinch. On a pain scale of 1-10, most rate it around 3-4. The entire procedure takes only 15-30 minutes.

The actual injection process takes approximately 15-30 minutes. However, plan for about 45 minutes to an hour total, which includes consultation, numbing time, the procedure itself, and post-treatment care instructions. Many clients come during their lunch break—it's often called a "lunchtime procedure."

Yes, you'll see increased volume immediately after treatment. However, expect swelling for 2-3 days that can make lips appear larger than the final result. The swelling subsides within 1-2 weeks, revealing your true results. Final results are visible at the 2-week mark once any bruising has faded and the filler has fully integrated with your tissue.

After Your Treatment

There is minimal downtime with lip fillers. Most clients return to normal activities immediately, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours. Swelling peaks at 24-48 hours and typically resolves within 3-5 days. Bruising, if it occurs, fades within 7-10 days. Most people feel comfortable attending social events within 2-3 days.

Hyaluronic acid lip fillers typically last 6-12 months, depending on the product used, your metabolism, and lifestyle factors. The lips are a high-movement area, so filler tends to break down faster here than in other facial areas. Regular touch-ups every 6-9 months can help maintain your desired look. With consistent maintenance, results may last longer over time.

Common side effects include swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at injection sites—these typically resolve within 1-2 weeks. Less common effects include asymmetry (easily corrected), lumps (can be massaged out), and cold sore reactivation. Rare but serious complications include vascular occlusion and infection. Choosing an experienced injector significantly reduces risks. Contact us immediately if you experience severe pain, discoloration, or vision changes.

Yes, one of the advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. If you're unhappy with your results or experience complications, the filler can be partially or fully dissolved within 24-48 hours. This reversibility provides peace of mind, especially for first-time clients.
